Startups and small businesses represent 97.5 percent of all businesses in Missouri, and they employ more than 1.1 million people — or nearly 50 percent of our state’s entire private workforce. And Missouri frequently pops up in the Top 10 on notable lists that rank startup activity across the United States.
Small businesses are a big deal in the Show Me State, and so are the enterprising owners who dare to bring them to life and shoulder great burdens to make them grow. To support and inform these trailblazers, my Bridgetower Media colleagues and I launched a startup of our own two years ago: Startup Missouri, a news platform devoted exclusively to early-stage entrepreneurs and newly fledged small businesses throughout Missouri.
Our mission, then as now: To highlight your one-of-a-kind stories – your mistakes, triumphs and hard-earned lessons — as well as timely information about business trends and useful resources to help your small businesses grow and succeed.
Since our launch in 2018, we’ve introduced and celebrated Missouri entrepreneurs through our Startup Missouri website, social media and publications. We’ve also connected entrepreneurs with one another, and with dozens of regional and national experts who offered invaluable business advice during our stimulating in-person and virtual Expo events.
Now, we’re adding this weekly newsletter to introduce you to all that Startup Missouri has to offer for you and other entrepreneurs in our state.
Today and in the weeks to come, you’ll meet small business owners who, like you, have faced hard decisions about everything from hiring and firing to finding loans or capital to stay afloat — and who are gracious about sharing the wisdom they’ve gleaned in the business trenches. You’ll learn from others’ missteps in our regular feature, “My Biggest Mistake.” You’ll find practical, first-hand tips on how to structure and run your businesses from lawyer-entrepreneur Chris Brown and experts from SCORE — as well as updates about programs and resources to assist small businesses.
We aim to deliver news that you’ll find both useful and inspiring. We also want to know what you think, and what you’d like to see us cover at Startup Missouri. Our success depends on providing information that contributes to your success, so please reach out to me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to hearing from you, and we look forward to delivering more great Startup Missouri stories to your inbox each week.
