Startup Missouri magazine will hold its second Startup Missouri Expo on Sept 15-17, offering three half-day sessions of virtual panel discussions, educational presentations and networking for entrepreneurs and businesses and organizations that support startups.

Startup Missouri Expo 2020 is designed to connect new entrepreneurs and leaders of startup businesses across the state with resources to help them develop, manage and grow their operations. Unlike its inaugural predecessor in 2019, however, the Expo this year will offer all-virtual, interactive sessions to ensure the safety of participants during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re excited about this year’s Startup Missouri Expo,” said Liz Irwin, group publisher of Startup Missouri magazine and its parent company, Missouri Lawyers Media.

“While today’s environment during this pandemic has created challenges for in-person gatherings, our virtual format does not diminish the opportunity for discussion, thought leadership and the sharing of ideas,” Irwin said. “We know those who attend will find great utility in the information that will surely assist in their entrepreneurial work.”

The Expo will feature a full roster of programming from 8:30-11:30 a.m. daily. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson is scheduled to open the Expo with welcoming remarks on Sept. 15, and the event will close on Sept. 17 with an IdeaBounce® pitch competition, sponsored by the Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington University in St. Louis.

Last year’s winners were Michael Sato and Joshua Veal-Briscoe, creators of Freecog, a GPS- and phone-based monitoring app that offers an inexpensive alternative to ankle bracelets often worn by criminal defendants who are free while awaiting trial. They won a $250 cash prize as well as mentoring opportunities, and they also were featured in Startup Missouri magazine earlier this year.

Also planned for the Expo are vendor presentations and interactive segments with serial entrepreneurs, attorneys who advise on patents, intellectual property and other startup-related aspects of law, venture capital experts and others with extensive experience in the startup space.

The Expo is produced by Startup Missouri, the magazine launched by Missouri Lawyers Media in 2018 to feature and provide useful resources for business owners in their first year or two of operation. Missouri Lawyers Media has produced statewide business and legal publications focused on law and courts, politics, government, real estate and business for more than 100 years.

Last year’s in-person Expo at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel St. Louis-Chesterfield drew nearly 300 entrepreneurs, mentors, vendors and others who shared insights on turning ideas into successful products and businesses. Startup Missouri will again partner with Washington University in St. Louis and SCORE to present Startup Expo 2020.
